Documents Required for a Portugal Work Visa for Indians

To apply for a Portugal Work Visa, you must collate certain important documents and mention your nearest Portugal VFS Global Centre to your employer. Here is a detailed list of the requisite documents.

Note: The checklist is not an exhaustive list and you might be asked for additional documents by the authorities, based on your preferred work visa type.

Valid Passport Your passport must be valid for up to 3 months

A Portuguese citizen or a foreign citizen living in Portugal legally declaring to support the candidate during the stay in Portugal. Their respective citizen ID or residence ID card is mandatory.

Types of Portugal Work Visa

There are primarily two types of Portugal Work Visa. Let's have a look at them.

A D1 visa grants two entries (valid for 4 months) in Portugal, within which the visa holder has to apply for a residency permit.

How to Apply for a Portugal Work Visa for Indians?

The initial procedure of application must be followed by the employer, following which the candidate must complete the process at either of the following consular posts or representation:

  • Embassy of Portugal in New Delhi
  • The Consulate General of Portugal in Goa
  • External Service Providers namely VFS Global in the following cities of Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, and Chennai.

Portugal Work Visa Application Procedure

  • The Portuguese employer must email the Visa Department of the Consular Section in India and submit the requisite documents for the stated visa type.
  • The visa department then verifies the documents. If the documents provided are accurate, the application is accepted and appointments will be granted by VFS.
  • Candidates will then be notified via email by the department mentioning the date and time slot of the appointment.
  • You must carry your applicable checklist (D1 and E8), a copy of the visa application form and the supporting documents to your designated VFS centre. The supporting documents must be on an A4 size paper.
  • If the applicable visa fee is not paid beforehand, you can pay at the time of your appointment. Keep the payment receipt with you for future perusal or reimbursement purposes.
  • Reach the VFS centre 15 minutes prior to your appointment time.
  • You will be required to submit biometrics to complete your application process.
  • Keep a note of the reference number to track your visa status online.

Note: The application procedure could be extended and the authorities might ask for a personal interview, scrutiny of bank accounts, and/ or verification of supporting documents, etc.

You will receive an update via email or SMS (if availed) stating the decision of the Portugal Visa Application Centre.

  • Visit the 'Track your Application' page on VFS Global.
  • Fill in your reference number (present on the invoice/ receipt issued by the Portugal visa application) and your date of birth.
