How to Apply for an Australia Work Visa for Indians?

Here is an overview of the Australia work visa application process. For the different categories of Australian visa types and their respective sub-class, there will be additional requirements that you must comply with:

Before Starting Application

You must meet the following requirements before starting your work visa application for Australia:

Skill Assessment

Check whether your preferred subclass visa type is still accepting applications. If yes, check whether the respective visa requires you to get your skills assessed. You need to provide a certified scanned copy with a positive result along with your visa application. Contact the relevant skill-assessing authority to get the skill assessment done.

Get the Transaction Reference Number (TRN)

If you have already secured a job contract from a registered employer in Australia. Your employer must submit a nomination application. Check with your employer for the Transaction Reference Number (TRN). You will require this number to apply for the respective visa type.

Get Your Documents Translated and Scanned

If your documents are not in English, get them translated into English. Request the translator to mention their name, address, contact number, qualifications and experience in the language. Get both the English and non-English documents scanned.

Gather the Required Documents

Collate all the required documents according to your preferred visa type. If you fail to comply with the requirements, are unable to prove your identity, or provide accurate information, your visa application might be refused, or you might be considered under the PIC 4020 (non-grant period).

Create an Immi Account

Register with your email address to create an ImmiAcount. You will receive an email verification code. After this, you must fill in the user and account details to complete the process.

Complete the Form & Pay the Fee

Attach the documents and pay the applicable Australia work visa fee to complete the requisite procedure. Your application will not be processed until you pay the fee.

Biometrics/Health Examinations

As per your preferred Australia visa type, you must schedule an appointment to provide your biometrics at your nearest Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC). Additionally, you might be requested to undergo health checkups to meet the health requirements.

Receive Visa Grant

Once your application has been successfully approved and processed, you will be notified via email or post. You will be provided with the visa grant number, the start date of your visa, and your visa conditions. You must keep a notification copy of the grant when you arrive in Australia.

Important Information

  • The High Commission does not undertake visa-related appointments. The online registration and the application must be done through the ImmiAccount itself. If you are suspicious, please report to the Border Watch Online Report, Department of Home Affairs.
  • Check the 'Actions required' on your ImmiAccount portal. You might be required to complete the process. They could be any one or few of the following:
    • Submit additional documents supporting your application.
    • Arrange a health exam.
    • Schedule an appointment and provide biometric collection.
    • Provide character assessment details.

You can check your Australia work visa application status online by logging into the Department of Home Affairs' ImmiAccount portal. Here is a quick overview of how to track the status:

  • Log in with your credentials (i.e. Username and Password) on your ImmiAccount
  • A status will be mentioned under the 'User application summary'.
  • If the application is still in the assessment stage, the status will be mentioned as 'Initial or further assessment'.
  • If the status mentions 'Finalised', it means that the decision has been made, and you will be notified via email or post.

    Ans: The applications are processed on a case-by-case basis and the processing time starts from the day your complete application is lodged. Skilled (Temporary) may take up to 34 days, whereas Skilled (Permanent) may take up to 20 months.
