Valentine’s Day

Wildly famous for being the festival of love, Valentine’s Day is celebrated every year on 14 February across several countries and has become a popular date. Also known as the Feast of Saint Valentine or Saint Valentine’s Day, it is considered the day of love and is celebrated across the globe in different ways.

On this day, couples profess their love to each other, exchange gifts and make their partner feel special. The date is so popular that it is the most popular marriage date in the Philippines!

Places to Visit this Valentine day

Why is Valentine’s Day Celebrated on 14th February?

Well, there are many historical records behind the origin of Valentine’s Day, dating back to the 5th century. Roman fertility festival Lupercalia was soon replaced by Saint Valentine’s Day on 14 February in honour of Saint Valentine.

According to legends, Saint Valentine was a priest in the Roman Catholic Church who used to help Roman soldiers secretly meet and marry their partners against the rule of Roman Emperor Claudius II. The emperor made it illegal for Roman soldiers to be married, as he believed it would help them stay entirely focused towards their duty to their country.

When Saint Valentine was jailed for going against the Emperor, he used to write letters to the girl he loved from prison, signing off as ‘From your Valentine’. This is how he became a symbol of love and the 14th of February was declared Saint Valentine’s Day.

How Valentine’s Day is Celebrated Today?

Valentine’s Day is special for people and families across different cultures. Couples celebrate the day by expressing their love to each other. In Japan and some other Southeast Asian countries, friends give chocolates to their friends and even classmates to make them feel special.

The day also provides the perfect opportunity for people to profess their love and shower their special someone with gifts, chocolates, and flowers. From candlelight dinner to doing their favourite things, couples spend this day cherishing the bond that they share.

One of the most popular things to do on Valentine’s Day is taking a romantic trip abroad. Whether your idea of romance is going for a candlelight dinner, going for a trek, trying out new activities or exploring a new city together, you can make your valentine feel special by planning the perfect Valentine’s Day date surprise for your partner. After all, there is hardly a better excuse for going for a romantic getaway than Valentine’s Day.
