Visiting Europe's Schengen region is on a lot of people's wishlist. However, the process of Schengen visa application is not that easy breezy. Over 2.3 million Indians applied for the Schengen visa in 2022, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations among Indians. The process involves a lengthy application formality, booking an appointment, providing several documents, & if needed, an interview. Here's the good news for those who wish to visit this area frequently! The European Commission had introduced a new visa 'cascade' scheme to provide an easier, multi-year Schengen visa for Indians.
The European Commission rolled out new visa rules for Indian nationals in April 2024, which are more favourable than the standard Visa Code rules. Indian travellers with an established travel history can apply under this new visa cascade scheme. The scheme will allow Indian passport holders to visit Europe's Schengen Zone easier than before, especially for frequent travellers.
The cascade visa scheme will ease the Schengen visa application process, given they meet the required criteria.
Eligible Indians can apply for this multiple-entry Schengen visa for a stay of no more than 90 days during a 180-day period.
Eligible Indians are no longer purpose-bound to visit the Schengen states.
This visa does not allow Indians to pursue any employment activities.
Indian passport holders who have already obtained and visited the Zone on two different Schengen visas within the last three years are eligible for this visa. They can apply for the two-year multiple-entry Schengen visa for Indians.
Depending on your passport validity, you can apply for a five-year visa after obtaining your two-year multiple-entry Schengen visa. During this period, you can visit the Schengen region with similar travel rights as other visa-free nationals.
Please note that you must meet all other requirements per the Schengen visa requirements. One of these requirements include having travel health insurance valid in the entire Schengen region. Visiting Schengen region requires all non-EU visitors to buy Schengen travel insurance with a minimum EUR 30,000 coverage.
The Schengen Region comprises 27 European nations that have acceded to the Schengen Agreement. All Schengen visa holders can visit the following countries:
Austria | Sweden | Czech Republic | Poland | Netherlands | Slovenia | Spain |
Norway | Germany | Portugal | France | Liechtenstein | Switzerland | Latvia |
Lithuania | Netherlands | Denmark | Finland | Slovakia | Greece | Belgium |
Luxembourg | Hungary |
Estonia |
Italy | Malta | Iceland |
It's a common misconception that all European countries require a Schengen visa. Another popular misconception that foreigners have is that all Schengen countries are a part of the European Union. Both of these groups are different, and this can confuse many people.
Even though the Schengen Region is border-free, you must plan a detailed itinerary for your Schengen visa application. This is because the procedure requires these details to determine your primary destination and any additional documents for your visiting purpose.
The introduction of the 'cascade' scheme will definitely make it easier for Indians to frequent the Schengen zone easily than before. This will save a lot of time and paperwork and let Indians freely visit the region within the validity period.
The move aims to provide an easier migration policy between India and the EU, making it easier for families, friends or travellers to visit the area. Make sure to buy travel insurance for your Schengen trip; it will meet your application requirements as well as protect you from several unexpected financial emergencies.
