Flying across cities and continents is the most preferred mode of transport for most travellers. In today's age, there's barely a place without active airlines or a bustling airport. However, there are places without any commercial airports, and yet they are easily accessible by most people. These countries are also pretty unique and are on most avid travellers' bucket lists. Let’s take a look at this short but interesting list and figure out how to get there!
Faulty infrastructure or government negligence-neither of these factors contributes to these countries' lack of airports. In fact, most of these are wealthy European nations with no lack of resources or intent.
However, the natural and historical attractions of these countries have made it impractical to build an airport. What's more, all of these countries have excellent railroads, expressways and even waterways to ensure that nobody complains about not getting a direct flight here. Without further ado, these are the countries without any airports:
Who isn't familiar with the smallest independent state in the world? But not everyone knows that Vatican City has no airport. The reason is simple-it's nearly impossible to fit an airport in the Holy See's less than 0.44 km square area.
However, this doesn't stop tourists, travellers and visitors from coming to the Vatican. It is among the holiest places in the world and it is visited by both religious and non-religious people. It's home to Saint Peter's Basilica, and Vatican Museums- home to the famous Sistine Chapel.
Indians can visit the Vatican City State (Holy See) by taking a flight to Rome. You can land directly in Rome or travel to Vatican City State from nearby countries, depending on your itinerary.
Situated between Spain and France, Andorra is a small country in the Pyrenees mountains. It has no airports as it can be dangerous to fly here, as the mountains here are as high as 3,000 metres. For this reason, you must fly into neighbouring countries and then commute to this country. It is any hiker's or trekker's dream, as the entire country can be covered on foot.
10% of Andorra has been declared World Heritage Sites. It is most famous for its natural beauty, as over 90% of this country is made of forests, mountains, rivers, meadows and lakes. The small country is covered with mountains and has more than 60 peaks. It also has one of the oldest parliaments in the world, dating back to 1419.
Indians can visit Andorra by flying to either Barcelona (Spain), or Toulouse (France). Once they reach, they can easily visit Andorra via different road transport available.
The playground of the rich, Monaco has always been on most traveller's list. It has stunning scenery and is very famous for its gambling facilities. However, the country is famous for so much more, beyond its luxury casinos, superyachts, Monaco Grand Prix, and Grimaldi Royal Family.
This country is the second smallest, only after the Holy Vatican City. It has no airport due to no space and travellers must visit Monaco via road or boat.
The nearest airport to Monaco is in France. Indians can take a flight to Nice de Asur airport and take a boat ride to Monaco. They can also travel to Monaco via road. Since Monaco is considered a de facto member of the Schengen Zone, you can visit it on a Schengen visa, given that you have mentioned it in your itinerary. You will also need valid Schengen travel insurance for your trip, in and outside Monaco.
Located between Spain and France, the Principality of Liechtenstein, too, has no space for an airport due to the mountains and the risks they entail. The best way to come here is by entering to another country.
This Alpine country is most famous for its winter sports, stunning resorts and excellent skiing facilities. You can easily visit Liechtenstein on a Schengen visa during your trip to Europe. Travel insurance for Liechtenstein, which is mandatory as it is part of the Schengen Zone.
Indians can take a flight to Austria or Switzerland and reach Liechtenstein via road. The closest major airports are in Zurich (Switzerland) and Austria (St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport).
San Marino is another country without any commercial airport. It is landlocked by Italy and is one of the oldest countries in the world. This European country dates back to the year 301 and attracts a lot of tourists due to its stunning architecture and historical attractions. It has no coastline but thanks to its flat topography, San Marino is well-connected by an extensive road network.
You can reach San Marino by taking a flight to Italy. You can also come here easily if you're in Florence, Pisa, Bologna or Venice in Italy.
Be it lack of sufficient space or heavy risks, these five countries have no airports to directly welcome travellers from other countries.
However, these places have a thriving tourism industry and a lot of visitors interested in Europe make a stop here.
If you too, are planning to visit one or more of these, don't forget to buy the travel insurance for your journey. It will keep you safe from extra financial burdens incase you face trouble here.
