A vehicle driving licence is issued to owners based on the type of motor vehicle they drive. To drive legally on the roads of India, it is essential to be aware of these types of Driving licences. Let us learn about the types of driving licences issued in India in detail:
Learner's Licence: A learner's licence (DL) is issued before a permanent driving licence. It allows the vehicle owner to properly learn driving, traffic signs, symbols, etc. This type of DL is issued for 6 months, after which a vehicle owner can apply for a permanent licence.
Permanent Driving Licence: An individual who has passed the RTO written and driving test can apply for a permanent driving licence. A permanent licence is valid for 20 years and can be renewed.
This licence assures that you are well-versed in driving an LMV on the road and have a sound knowledge of all the traffic signals.
Commercial Driving Licence: A commercial driving licence is given to individuals who drive commercial vehicles, such as heavy or medium motor vehicles, for commercial purposes, such as transporting passengers or goods. This type of driving licence is mandatory for cars with 8 or more seating capacity.
International Driving Permit: This type of driving permit is given to Indians who want to drive in foreign countries. It is issued to individuals who hold a valid permanent driving licence and are residents of India.

A valid driving licence is mandatory in India to drive legally. If the traffic police catch you driving a vehicle without a DL, you will have to pay a heavy traffic fine and may also face imprisonment. A driving licence is an essential document because it gives an individual the legal authority to drive their vehicle on Indian roads.
Moreover, a valid DL can also be used as evidence of personal identification. You can show your DL as an ID in places like government offices and airports, as a DL is equivalent to other forms of personal identification like PAN cards, Aadhar cards, Voter IDs, etc.
Apart from being mandatory, getting a driving licence is essential to raise a valid claim under your vehicle insurance policy. Your insurer will only approve your motor insurance claim if you present a valid driving licence.
mParivahan is a Government-owned mobile application that contains all vehicle-related information. A DL available on this app is valid and can be downloaded.
A virtual driving licence can be downloaded from the mParivahan app. Visit the app and download a PDF of your driving licence in DigiLocker. You can also see the Parivahan portal and download your DL from the website.
