Understanding the 12 Point System of Telangana State (TS) Traffic Police

The Telangana State has implemented a robust penalty system known as the 12-point System to regulate traffic violations effectively. This point system is the framework that involves assigning penalty points to several offences by a vehicle owner/driver over a span of two years.

      Here is how it works:

Exceeding 12 penalty points: If the driver accumulates and exceeds 12 penalty points within 2 years, their driving license is suspended for at least one year.

Repeated Violations: The consequences are stricter for repeat offenders and the government has to go for suspension or cancellation of their driving license for up to 2 years.

Learner's License Holders: Riders with a learner's license can face restrictions if they accumulate more than five penalty points within two years.

Here's a breakdown of penalty points assigned for common traffic violations in Telangana:

      Violation Description Penalty Points
Carrying extra passengers in the front seat 1
      Not wearing a helmet 1
      Riding an insured two-wheeler 2
Carrying passengers in a cargo vehicle 2
Driving on wrong-side of the road 2
Driving vehicle using mobile phone, jumping signal, overloading, or zig-zag lane crossing. 2
Over-speeding or taking the wrong route 2
      Drunk driving (while riding a two-wheeler) 3
      Drunk driving (while driving a four-wheeler) 4
Drunk driving (while driving a public vehicle) 5
      Racing 3
Causing pollution or parking endangering safety (on highway) 2
      IPC Cases 279, 336, 337, and 338 2
      Cases 304 (A), 304 (II) 5
