Although this is the reality, parents can take several steps to ensure their children's safe, secure and loving environment.

The following are some best tips for Divorced Parents

  1. Helping Kids with Emotional Stability - Encouraging kids to share their feelings

Often during a divorce, children become really quiet. They often don't understand what is going on particularly when they are young. They do not know whom to speak to, what to speak and if to speak at all. This creates a lot of thoughts in their head which takes a huge toll on their mental health. The more they keep these thoughts to themselves, the more averse they become from trusting people and sharing their emotions.

That is why it is very important for both parents to put aside their issues when it comes to their children. They should initiate conversations with their children and understand what they are thinking or feeling - be it positive or negative . This will help in two ways. This will help the parents put away their perspective and hear a third point of view. Secondly it will act as an outlet for the children to say what they want to and not keep it to themselves, which in the long run can be extremely bad for their mental health.

If you feel like you wont be able to stay calm or feel upset having a conversation with your children , ask someone trusted - a family friend or a relative to talk to your children instead. It is important for children to see their parents sad and upset, however if these emotions become too strong, children might start to blame themselves for these emotions.

If your children do observe you struggling with strong emotions, demonstrate healthy coping strategies as much as possible. Here are some suggestions:

    • Identify and name your emotion for them ("Right now, I'm feeling sad.").

    • Reassure them that it's normal to feel this way sometimes ("It's okay and perfectly normal for me to feel sad.").

    • Discuss how you plan to manage your emotions ("One thing that usually helps me feel better when I'm sad is baking cookies with you or spending time outdoors. Let's do that together!").

  2. Keep Your Arguments Separate - Don't Get the Children Involved

It is important to keep your adult arguments away from the children. Do not talk bad about their other parents to them. If both parents do that, the child will have no one to trust and can easily become introverted and shy. It puts kids in a very tough spot if they have to hear negative talks from both sides and pick sides. Several researches show that the single biggest factor in long-term adjustment for kids of divorce is the level of parental conflict they see. So remember to keep your anger and negativity to yourself and don't share it with your children even if you think they are too small to remember in the future.

  3. Get Help- Figure out how to reduce stress

It can be overwhelming to go through a divorce for both the parents and the children. Both parents and children seek external help and talk to someone- be it a therapist, a friend or a relative. This helps reduce stress levels and understand things better. Parents should encourage their children to talk to therapists. Talking to a therapist can help them understand things better while at the same time helping them clear their head about things they might not be so comfortable sharing with you. Joining support groups can also help share their feelings and relate to others.

  4. Making Co-parenting work - Aiming for consistency

Positive Co-parenting can help foster a safe and secure environment for the children after a divorce or separation. When both parents are around when needed, children feel loved and happy. Parents should strive to improve communication with one another after to divorce to ensure that the children are taught good values.

Hearing both parents' perspectives on things can help them become well-rounded human beings. However, they also need assurance that they are operating under similar expectations in both homes. Consistency between your home and your ex-partner's home helps prevent confusion for your children. Communicating with each other can help us navigate through this problem.

Wrapping it up!!

While dealing with the complexities of parenting post-divorce, focussing on children's emotional stability, maintaining consistent communication, and fostering a supportive co-parenting environment is key. By focusing on these principles, parents can help remove the impact of divorce on their children, ensuring they grow up in a safe and secure environment.
