As a direct fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic people are practicing social distancing and aren’t using their vehicles much. But, now that the unlock phase has started across the country, you might want to use your car. As a safety measure, it is advisable that you should check the condition of your car. And, if needed, take your vehicle to a workshop for checking a few things before taking it out on the road for work.

When checking, one of the most important things to look for is the condition of your car's engine. As much as the heart is a vital organ for your body, the engine is for your car. Therefore, it's important to take care of it. The function of the car engine is so critical that it would be a sheer mistake to ignore its upkeep.

Quick Checklist For Engine Care:

1. Change the engine oil regularly: Engine oil keeps vital parts of the engine lubricated. If the engine isn’t lubricated enough, the parts will wear and tear due to friction. Therefore, it’s important to change the engine oil regularly. We should always use the engine oil recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Cooling system: Regular maintenance of a cooling system in a car helps to keep the vehicle running smoothly and increase the engine's overall performance and life. When a car is on the move, the engine generates a lot of heat. To maintain the optimal temperature of the engine, cars are fitted with a cooling system. Once the engine reaches a certain operating temperature, the heat is absorbed by the water/coolant that flows through the engine. The coolant then flows back to the radiator where it is cooled down by the air circulating through the grill, so it can return to the process. One should also check the radiator belts and hoses for any wear and tear regularly.

3. Keep air and fuel filters clean: Check your car’s air and fuel filters and get them cleaned or replaced if they are too clogged. Your car’s air filter prevents harmful particles, dust, and contaminants from entering the engine. A fuel filter screens out dirt particles from the fuel, keeping them from entering the engine and causing damage. When they age, they get contaminated with pollutants causing stress to vital parts of the car.

4. Check engine light: Sometimes, when you start your car, a yellow light illuminates on the dashboard. It's called check engine light which turns on if there is an issue with the engine. In case this happens, you should immediately get your car checked at the nearest garage.

5. Check spark plug: Spark plugs should be replaced before they reach the point of failure. Check for any wear and tear or any dust particles settled on the spark plug. Spark plugs are small but important engine components that receive high voltage electricity and produce a spark that contributes to power the engine.

6. Check battery: The car’s battery loses its charge if not used for an extended period of time. When a car’s battery loses its charge completely, it will require a jumpstart to the car. So, get your battery checked before taking the car on the road.
