Since bikers have less advantage in terms of safety, this technology make sure to give more control of the bike in the rider’s hand with a surety of advance safety feature. Just like you take two wheeler insurance for those emergencies that secure you from the expenses you face in case you damaged your bike.

What is Anti-lock Breaking System?

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) prevents wheel locking and increase stability while applying breaks for a jerk free ride.

As we know that two-wheelers are less stable than four-wheelers it becomes necessary for the bike companies to keep on enhancing their buyers riding experience by installing ABS in their bikes and take care of their safety just like they enhance their engine with every other upcoming bike.

How Drum Brakes & Anti-lock Breaking System Works?

The most important factor while riding a two-wheeler is that it does not skid on the road while applying brakes all of sudden. It happens when the brakes applied by the biker is harder than required to stop the bike resulting the tyres skid on the road and leads to accidents. This used to happen in the bikes with drum brakes. It was very unsettling for the rider as the rider gets stuck between two things only while applying brakes. If he is applying less force on the brakes the bike wouldn’t stop on time and he applies more force then the tyres skid.

Now, the Anti-lock braking system prevents the tyres from skidding. It prevents the tyre from locking during braking. It measures the speed of the wheel constantly and compares it with the wheel speed that the system predicts. This measurement is done by individual speed sensors. When the measurement of the wheel’s speed deviates from the predicted wheels speed by the speed censor, the ABS takes control and corrects the brake force on the wheel to keep it from skidding.

Parts of ABS system

The Anti-lock braking system consists of 4 major parts which are as follows:

Electronic Control Unit (ECU):

This part consist microprocessor based system which contains programs. It is placed under the rider’s seat.

Electronic Speed Sensor:

This measures the wheel’s velocity and bike’s acceleration. IT is located on the wheel hub.

Toothed Disc:

It is located in the brake disc which helps the speed sensor to read the wheel’s speed.

Electrically Controller Valve:

It controls the pressure in the brake cylinder.

Brief History of ABS in India

The first bike in India with ABS technology was launched by TVS. They launched one of their popular bike TVS Apache RTR 180 in March 2011. It was first made in India bike with Anti-lock braking system.

In April, 2019 it was made compulsory for not just two-wheelers but four-wheelers to have ABS system installed. It was important step towards improving road safety. According to the directions, all two-wheelers with a 125cc engine displacement have to be equipped with ABS.

Advantages of ABS

There are multiple of advantages of ABS in a bike which are as follows:

Stops in slippery surface:

As we have already mentioned that the ABS prevents the tyres from getting locked and skidding even in slippery roads. ABS has proven to save the life of the rider as it gives more control to the rider.

No worries about sudden brakes:

Every Indian is aware of the condition of traffic and the roads in India. Many times the rider has to pull the brakes all of a sudden and ABS helps take the control of the bike and don’t let the tyres skid and stops on time before hitting anyone or anything.

Lower Insurance:

As the ABS system has been tested successfully, the two-wheeler insurance comes with lower premiums as the insurer gives discount in the insurance plan while purchasing it.

Traction control:

The traction control system, ABS shares the infrastructure with the traction control in the bike and it makes it easier for the manufacturer to install both the features.

Stopping distance:

The braking force is controlled as well as applied electronically in a bike. The ABS system helps reduce the stopping distance as compared to non-ABS bikes.

To Conclude

It has been made compulsory for all the bike and car manufacturers in India to install Anti-lock braking system in their vehicles keeping the safety of citizens in mind. Since safety is the utmost priority for everyone, the two-wheeler owner should have an insurance plan for the bike. And also remember to buy insurance online where you can get better deals and plans.
