When Do You Need to Retain Your Old Car’s Number?

The number of their car matters to many car owners. Some get their car’s number issued just for the sake of having a registration certificate and identifying their cars, but some purchase numbers stand out from the normal ones, and some also consider some of the numbers lucky for them.

For instance, Rohit has a car, and he has a habit of changing his car every 2-3 years. His car’s registration number is 7843, and he considers this as his lucky number based on a belief that he is so financially stable that he can manage to change his old car with a new one every 2-3 years. This is the belief of Rohit that makes him put the same number in every new car.

It is not just about considering a number lucky; people have different kinds of beliefs, and this is one of them. So how would you do it if you want to transfer your old car’s number to your new car?

How to Transfer Old Car’s Number to New One?

First of all, keeping a car comes with a lot of responsibility. Once you purchase a car, you become responsible towards society and the environment and be prepared for the unforeseen incidents that come along with it. In order to be a responsible citizen and save the environment, the Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUC) is a must-have, and to keep your car covered from unforeseen financial losses, a motor insurance policy is a must.

But once your vehicle gets old and starts performing badly, you know it is time to change it. If your car’s number means anything to you and you want to use it on your new car, then you should know a few things and become eligible to transfer the old vehicle number to the new vehicle.

What you need to know is that an allotted registered vehicle number cannot be assigned to any other vehicle, even if it has been cancelled. If the registered car number has been owned by the same person for more than 3 years then he/she can get the same number transferred to their new car.

There is an online process that you can go through to retain your vehicle registration number. See the steps below to follow it:

      • Visit the official website of VAHAN (https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/vahaneservice/)
      • Select "Retention of Registration No." from the list of Vehicle Services
      • Login using User ID, password and Submit OTP
      • If you are not logged in, register via your mobile number on the portal
      • Go to the "Service Details" section and click the "Appointment" option to book your appointment at the state RTO. Select the desired date and available time slot.
      • Pay the required fees for the transfer of the old registration number
      • A slip will be generated by the system with your registration number on it
      • Complete the rest of the formalities. Then you will have to submit the slip to the car dealer from where you have purchased the new car
      • They will enter the registration number into their online system, and then the new car will be registered under the same number
      • The car/number owner has to go to the Motor License Officer’s office
      • Then, on your visit to the office, they will receive the new number for the old vehicle.

      Categories of Car Numbers

The transport department has created 4 categories of vehicle registration numbers. One of them is the VIP number with certain numbers like 0001,0011, 0022, etc. The other categories can be chosen as per the car owners' requirements and choose their special number.

For example, For a registered number 0001, you will have to spend around Rs. 50,000, or you can pay 10% of the minimum reserve price when it goes for auction. Whereas for the registration numbers 0002 to 0009, you will have to pay around Rs. 30,000 or 10% of the minimum auction price, that is Rs. 3. Lakh. However, you will have to pay around Rs. 25,000 for the other number plates you desire.

      Wrapping Up!

There is a saying, “Out with the old and in with the new”. With the advanced technology coming out every year, the motor companies come up with new cars with advanced and smart interiors, and with time, every car gets old, and one day comes that you have to sell it and purchase a new car, but if you want to retain your old car’s registration number and use it on your new one, then you can do it. Also, don’t forget to keep the new one insured with the right car insurance and compare car insurance online while purchasing it online.
