      Star Health Insurance Portability

Star Health Insurance Portability is a facility offered by Star Health & Allied Insurance that allows customers of other insurance companies to switch to a Star health insurance policy. Benefits of Porting to a Star Health Insurance Policy

Here are some of the key benefits of porting to a Star health insurance policy:

      • Opt for Better Coverage Benefits – Customers of other health insurers can port to a Star health policy to upgrade their coverage level and get better services from the insurance company without paying any additional fee. For example, people can port to a Star health insurance policy to get unlimited restoration benefit, annual health check-ups, OPD benefit, etc.
      • Transfer of Waiting Periods Served – When a policy is ported to Star health insurance, the waiting periods served under the previous policy are carried forward. As a result, the policyholder has to serve only the remaining waiting periods after porting to a Star health insurance policy.
      • No Loss of NCB – Portability prevents any loss of accumulated NCB or No Claim Bonus when the policyholder shifts to a Star health policy. For example, if the NCB under the previous policy is 25%, the same will be carried forward to the Star health insurance policy.
      • Get Lower Premiums – With portability, a person can easily switch to a Star health insurance policy with a lower premium in case their existing policy with similar coverage has become expensive due to age or the insurer’s underwriting.

How to Port to a Star Health Insurance Policy?

Porting to a Star health insurance policy has become seamless with the process going online. Take a look at the steps to port to a Star health insurance policy online on Policybazaar.com:

Step 1: Choose a Star health insurance policy you want to buy.

Step 2: Raise a request with Policybazaar to port to your desired Star health policy around 45 days before your current policy expiry date.

Step 3: Submit the duly filled online proposal & portability forms to Policybazaar.

Step 4: Pay the premium for the desired Star health insurance policy.

Step 5: Policybazaar will forward your portability request to Star Health & Allied Insurance.

Step 6: Star Health & Allied Insurance will contact your existing insurer to obtain details on your claim history, medical documents, etc. They can also get this information from the IRDAI website.

Step 7: Your current insurer will provide all the requested details to Star Health & Allied Insurance through IRDAI’s common data-sharing portal within 7 working days. The decision on your portability request will be put on hold if there is any delay in data sharing by your existing insurer.

Step 8: Star Health & Allied Insurance will accept or reject your portability request based on the received documents within 15 days. If no decision is made within this period, your portability request will be auto-accepted.

Documents Required for Star Health Insurance Portability

Check out the list of documents required for Star health insurance portability:

      • Copy of previous year’s medical insurance policies
      • Latest renewal notice clearly mentioning the NCB
      • Details of claim history in the previous policies
      • Medical documents, like hospital discharge certificates, test reports, etc., in case of claims

How Does NCB Work Under Star Health Insurance Portability?

When an existing policy is ported to Star health insurance, the NCB accumulated under the previous policy works differently under different scenarios. Let’s discuss each of these scenarios in detail below:

Scenario 1: If the policyholder opts for a Star health policy with the same base sum insured, the waiting periods of the previous policy will suffice.

For eg: Suppose Anil has a Rs 5 lakh health policy with an NCB of Rs 5 lakh, and he wants to port to a Star health insurance policy of Rs 5 lakh. In this case, the waiting periods from the previous policy will be carried forward, and he can avail the coverage benefits without serving any additional waiting periods.

Scenario 2: If the policyholder ports to a Star health policy with a base sum insured equivalent to the previous policy’s base sum insured plus the NCB, then the waiting periods of the previous policy will be sufficient.

For eg: Suppose Anil has a Rs 5 lakh health policy with an NCB of Rs 5 lakh, and he wants to port to a Star health insurance policy of Rs 10 lakh. In this case, the waiting periods of the previous policy will be carried forward without the need for serving any additional waiting periods. This happens because the base of the previous policy i.e. Rs 5 lakh and the NCB i.e. Rs 5 lakh is equal to the Star health policy’s base sum insured i.e. Rs 10 lakh.

Scenario 3: If the policyholder opts for a Star health policy with a higher base sum insured than the previous health policy’s base sum insured plus the NCB, then waiting periods will apply for the additional coverage amount.

For eg: Suppose Anil has a Rs 5 lakh health policy with an NCB of Rs 5 lakh, and he wants to port to a Star health insurance policy of Rs 15 lakh. In this case, the waiting periods served under the previous policy will suffice for a coverage amount of Rs 10 lakh. But to claim the additional Rs 5 lakh, standard waiting periods must be served.
