Health Insurance for Paralysis Patients

Health insurance for paralysis patients covers the medical expenses incurred on the treatment of paralysis. It pays a lump sum amount to the policyholder as soon as paralysis with permanent symptoms is diagnosed. Paralysis is a critical illness and hence, most insurers cover it under a critical illness insurance plan. However, it can also be covered under a comprehensive health insurance policy by buying a critical illness rider.

      What is Paralysis?

Paralysis is a medical condition where a person loses the functioning of muscles in the body and cannot make voluntary movements. It usually occurs due to damage to the nervous system, often caused as a side effect of injuries to the spinal cord or brain. Sometimes, a cancerous cell can also lead to a paralysis attack. Besides motor loss (i.e. loss of muscle function), paralysis can also lead to sensory loss (i.e. loss of sensation in the affected areas).

Paralysis is one of the most common life-threatening medical conditions. As per the Indian Institute of Paralysis, a person has paralysis in India every minute, with 90% of them not getting proper treatment. Moreover, it may lead to other health problems like depression, chest pain and high blood pressure.

      Types of Paralysis

Paralysis can be of different types, depending on the affected area. They are as follows:

      • Monoplegia - When the patient loses control over their limbs.
      • Hemiplegia - When the patient loses control over one side of their body.
      • Quadriplegia - When the patient loses control over all their four limbs.
      • Locked-in Syndrome - When the patient loses complete control over voluntary muscle movements in the body, except for the ones that regulate the movements of the eyes.

Some other types of paralysis are as follows:

      • Temporary - When the control over a few or all muscles goes and comes back periodically.
      • Permanent - When the patient loses control over their muscles forever.
      • Spastic - When the patient’s muscles are hard & tight and jerk oddly.
      • Flaccid - When the patient’s muscles shrink and become flabby.

      What Causes a Paralysis Attack?

Here are some of the causes of a paralysis attack:

      • Spinal Cord Injury
      • Strokes
      • Brain Tumour
      • Spinal Tumour
      • Multiple Sclerosis
      • Cerebral Palsy
      • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
      • Acute Flaccid Myelitis
      • Muscular Dystrophy
      • Guillian-Barre Syndrome
      • Post-Polio Syndrome
      • Neurofibromatosis
      • Spina Bifida
      • Leukodystrophies
      • Brachial Plexus Injury
      • Lyme Disease
      • Transverse Myelitis

Benefits of Buying Health Insurance for Paralysis Treatment in India

Take a look at some of the key reasons for buying health insurance for paralysis patients in India:

      1. High Incidence of Paralysis in India

Paralysis has become extremely common in India. As per national statistics, around 12,000 to 15,000 cases of paralysis per one crore people are found every year in India. Besides, there is no complete cure for paralysis. By buying health insurance for paralysis in India, people can stay financially prepared for any incidence of paralysis attack in future.

      2. Expensive Paralysis Treatment Cost

Paralysis treatment is quite expensive in India. Usually, paralysis treatment cost in India falls between the range of ₹7000 and ₹1 lakh, depending on the disease’s severity and the affected body part. Besides, the patient may constantly need physiotherapy, wheelchair support, crutches, full-time nursing, etc., adding to the medical costs. With critical illness insurance, the policyholder can use the lump sum amount received by the insurer to pay for the medical bills incurred on the treatment and recovery from paralysis.
