Can NRIs in the UAE Buy Health Insurance Plans in India?

      Yes.

All NRIs residing in the United Arab Emirates can buy health insurance plans from an insurer in India. They can purchase a health policy for not only themselves but also their families while living in the UAE or visiting India. All they need to do is prove their Indian citizenship by submitting a few documents, such as their recent ITR, address proof, etc. to the insurance company.

Why NRIs in the UAE Should Buy Health Insurance from India?

Take a look at some of the reasons why NRIs living in the UAE should buy health insurance from India:

      1. Lower Premiums

NRIs living in the UAE should prefer buying health insurance from India as they are available for much lower premiums than the Arab country. This happens because healthcare services in the UAE are much more costly as compared to India. The following table compares the estimated prices of common medical procedures in India and the UAE:

Cost of Medical Procedures (Approx.) India ($) UAE ($)
        Heart Bypass 5,200 25,000
        Heart Valve Replacement 5,500 25,000
        Cardiac Arrest 7,000 10,000
        Knee Replacement 6,200 13,000
        General MRI Scan 100 2,500
        Cataract Surgery 1,000 4,000
        Liver Transplant 50,000 30,000
        Hip Replacement 7,000 12,500
        Spinal Fusion 6,500 16,000
        Bone Marrow Transplant 50,000 30,000

Since most medical facilities are affordable in India, UAE-based NRIs can buy health insurance for lower premiums from India.

      2. GST Refund

Health insurance premiums in India comprise of a mandatory GST of 18%. However, NRIs who pay tax in the UAE can get a GST refund from their insurers in India provided the policy was purchased for a 1-year tenure and from an NRE account. To claim the GST refund, UAE-based NRIs have to submit a declaration to the insurance company along with the TRC and 6 months bank statement of the NRE account used to buy the policy.

      3. Global Coverage

Most health insurance plans for NRIs are available with worldwide coverage allowing policyholders to claim overseas healthcare expenses incurred on hospitalization, day care treatments and maternity. So if UAE-based NRIs buy health insurance with global coverage from India, their insurer will cover the medical expenses incurred in both countries.

      4. More Variety of Plans

NRIs living in the UAE can find a wide variety of health insurance plan options in India as compared to the UAE. This is because more than 20 insurance companies registered with the IRDAI provide health insurance in India. Moreover, every insurer offers multiple plans catering to the specific needs of different customers. Therefore, NRIs can compare several plans together and select the best health plan as per their medical requirements.
