Who Can Apply for an Ayushman Bharat Card?

The eligibility criteria for the Ayushman Bharat card vary for people living in rural and urban India based on their income. However, the Union Cabinet in September 2024 extended health insurance coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 years & above under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). Here is the Ayushman Bharat eligibility list for both rural and urban households:

      1. PMJAY Eligibility for Rural Households:

Families in rural areas must meet at least one of the following criteria to apply for an Ayushman Bharat card:

        • Residing in a single room with kucha walls and roof.
        • No adult member aged 16 to 59 years
        • No adult male member aged 16 to 59 years.
        • Having a disabled member or no able-bodied adult member.
        • Belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) or Scheduled Tribes (ST).
        • Landless households primarily dependent on manual casual labour for income.
      2. PMJAY Eligibility for Urban Households:

In urban areas, the eligibility for an Ayushman card is extended to the following categories of workers:

        • Beggars
        • Ragpickers
        • Domestic workers
        • Washermen and watchmen
        • Street vendors, cobblers, hawkers, and other street service providers
        • Construction workers, plumbers, head-load workers, labourers, masons, welders, coolies, security guards and painters
        • Sweepers, gardeners, and sanitation workers
        • Home-based workers, artisans, handicraft workers, and tailors
        • Transport workers, drivers, cart pullers conductors, rickshaw pullers and helpers to drivers and conductors

      FAQs

      • Q1. Is the Ayushman card valid for the whole family?

Ans: Yes, the Ayushman Bharat card is valid for the entire family as the PMJAY scheme offers medical coverage on a family floater basis. This means that the coverage amount of ₹5 lakh is shared by all eligible family members.
      • Q2. What is covered under the Ayushman card?

Ans: The Ayushman Bharat card covers all healthcare expenses related to secondary and tertiary hospitalisation of the beneficiary up to ₹5 lakh.
      • Q3. Are senior citizens eligible for the Ayushman card?

Ans: Yes, all senior citizens aged 70 years and above are eligible to apply for the Ayushman Bharat card regardless of their income.
      • Q4. Is treatment with the Ayushman Bharat card cashless?

Ans: Yes, hospitals that are part of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana offer cashless treatment to eligible beneficiaries. This means you do not have to pay out of pocket at the time of obtaining treatment at an empanled hospital.
      • Q5. Is Ayushman Bharat Yojana enough to cover all my medical expenses in India?

Ans: No, the Ayushman Bharat Yojana is not sufficient to cover all your healthcare expenses in India as it only provides coverage of ₹5 lakh. Given the high costs of healthcare facilities in India, this amount may not be enough for you and your family’s healthcare needs. In contrast, private health insurance offers extensive coverage and allows you to choose a sum insured up to ₹6 crore. So, for better coverage, it is recommended to opt for a private health insurance plan.
