      What is Section 80D?

Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, 1961, provides tax benefits to individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) for health insurance premiums paid during a financial year. However, the medical insurance premium should be paid in any mode other than cash to be eligible for a Section 80D deduction.

If you buy a health insurance policy for yourself, your spouse, and your children, you can claim a tax deduction of up to ₹25,000. However, if the mediclaim insurance policy covers a senior citizen aged 60 years or above, the deduction limit increases to ₹50,000 per financial year.

The tax exemptions available u/s 80D of the Income Tax Act, 1961 can be better understood with the help of the table below:

Covered Individuals Premium Paid Tax Benefit u/s 80D
For Self, Spouse & Children For Parents
      Individual and Parents (below 60 years) ₹25,000 ₹25,000 ₹50,000
      Individual and Family (below 60 years) & Parents (above 60 years) ₹25,000 ₹50,000 ₹75,000
Individual, Family and Parents (above 60 years) ₹50,000 ₹50,000 ₹1,00,000
      Members of HUF ₹25,000 ₹25,000 ₹25,000

NOTE: The tax exemption limit for NRIs paying tax in India is the same as for individuals and senior citizens.

Is Proof Required to Claim Deduction Under Section 80D?

No, you do not need to submit any proof to the Income Tax Department to claim a deduction u/s 80D of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Still, it is recommended to keep a proper record of all the supporting documents, such as health insurance premium receipts, medical bills, etc., in case tax officials require them at any point in time.

In fact, if you are a salaried employee, your employer might also request you to submit a copy of your health insurance policy and premium receipts to provide Form 16 for filing an income tax return. Moreover, if you file your income tax return independently without relying on Form 16, maintaining these documents can make the process smooth and hassle-free.

When Do You Need to Submit Proof for Tax Deductions?

Although proof is not required for claiming deductions under Section 80D, you must provide supporting documents for tax deductions under the following sections:

      • Section 80DD: If you are claiming a tax deduction of up to ₹75,000 (or ₹1,25,000 for severe disability) per financial year for the treatment of a disabled dependent, you need to submit a medical certificate of disability issued by a government-approved medical board at the time of filing your income tax return.
      • Section 80DDB: If you are claiming a tax deduction of up to ₹40,000 (or ₹1 lakh for senior citizens) per financial year for medical expenses on specified diseases, such as AIDS, cancer or chronic renal failure, you must provide proof of treatment while filing the income tax return.
